Description
Another wilderness of our country falling under the Western Ghats Nilgiri Sub-Cluster which is under consideration by the UNESCO World Heritage Committee for selection as a World Heritage Site, the 150 sq km of Mudumalai National Park is truly India`s gem.
Also declared as a Tiger Reserve with the same name in 2007 this area was completely dedicated to its resident wildlife when about 350 families living in the core area were evicted.
The vegetation in the park consists of tropical moist deciduous forest in the high rainfall areas, tropical dry deciduous forests in the middle and southern tropical dry thorn forests in the east. In addition to this there are patches of semi-evergreen forests in the southwestern and western parts of the park.
The sheer amount of fauna found in the park is mind boggling. 55 species of mammals, 230 species of birds, 34 species of reptiles, 21 species of amphibians,50 species of fish and the list goes on. A survey conducted revealed that 13% of all mammalian species found in India consider the park as their home. Of the 15 species of wild cats found in India, Mudumalai is home to 4 of them; the Tiger, the Leopard, the Leopard Cat and the Jungle Cat.
